Make-Ahead Coney Sauce

With summer coming up, it’s time to think barbecues and picnics. Here’s my favorite tried-and-true recipe for the ultimate coney sauce. You can make it ahead, and store it in meal size containers in the freezer for up to three months.

Make-Ahead Coney Sauce

Ingredients
  • 2 lbs. ground beef, cooked and drained
  • 2 medium onions, diced
  • 16 oz. tomato sauce
  • 2 c. water
  • ¼ c. barbecue sauce
  • ¼ c. prepared mustard
  • 1 beef bullion cube
  • 2 Tbs. fresh parsley, minced
  • 2 Tbs. dried onion flakes
  • 2 Tbs. chili powder
  • 1 Tbs. sugar
  • 1 tsp hot pepper sauce (I use Frank’s)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin

Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat, cover and simmer on low for 1-2 hours.
  3. Serve over hot dogs or allow to cool and store in meal size containers in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Made this coney sauce last week, and it was so yummy. Can’t wait to make it again.
