Guest Post: Make Your Own Kool-Aid Play Doh

July 7, 2011 · 7 comments

My name is Kristen and I blog over at My Junk Drawer. I am so excited to get to be a guest today!  I am also excited to share my childhood fun with you.

When I was a kid I used to make Kool-Aid play dough with my siblings. I was the oldest and took care of them when my mom couldn’t so I had to come up with fun things that I could do with stuff we had on hand. In school we learned how to make play dough so I came home and added Kool-Aid to make fun colored play dough. It is so simple and the kids love being part of making it.

First, you will need to invite a friend and her kids over to come have fun with you!!

You will need: (This recipe is for one ball of play dough, for our play date today I used 4 times this recipe so every kid would have enough)

1 1/2 – 2 cups flour
1/4 cup salt
1 cup water
1 Tablespoon oil
1 package of Kool-Aid

Step 1: boil water before hand, then add the oil and the package of kool-Aid so it will dissolve. Since I was doing 4 times the amount I put 1 cup of water in to four bowls then used 4 different colors of kool-aid. like this…

Step 2: Put 1 1/2 cups of flour and all of the salt into a bowl…

Step 3: After it has cooled a little bit, add the water mixture to the dry mixture and hand the bowl to a kid to stir.

Step 4: You may or may not need this step depending on the humidity in your area, if the mixture is still very gooey add 1/4 cup of flour at a time until it looks like the 2nd picture below.

Step 5: When the dough is formed, hand it off to the kids and let them have fun!

Step 6: When they are done playing with it, store each color in a separate airtight container. They should keep 2-3 months.

**Remember to add the oil in step 1! I don’t know why it makes a difference but it does.

I hope you all have fun making play dough with your little ones. Thanks Lori for having me as a guest on your site!

I’m wondering if you could use food coloring instead of the kook aid.

Viki, food coloring would probably stain. The koolaid is neat because not only does it color the dough but makes it smell yummy too!

Does it have to be vegetable oil, or can I use olive oil?
