DIY Glass Cleaner

January 31, 2012 · 3 comments

I’ve read about DIY glass cleaners containing vinegar, and have resisted trying because I couldn’t imagine dealing with the smell. But glass cleaner is something I rarely get for free with coupon, and I knew this was a no-brainer way to save a few bucks. So I decided to give it a go…expecting not to like it, but trying to keep an open mind.

The bad news: Even with the addition of essential oils, it still smells like vinegar. Mmmm-Hmmm. Not my fave.
The good news: It works like buttah. Would you believe even BETTER than my windex?  Clean, streak-free awesomeness.
More good news: The smell doesn’t stick around. Lasts about 30 seconds or so and then it’s gone.

My conclusion? This is the only thing I’m ever using to clean glass or mirrors again. No reason to buy other cleaners that are much more expensive and don’t work as well. I am officially on the vinegar bandwagon…er…um…you know what I mean.

Ingredients:

  • 3 c. vinegar
  • 1 c. water

Mix together in a spray container.  Now pat yourself on the back for saving so much money.

NOTE: I omitted the essential oils from the ingredients list because it did nothing to mask the smell. Not worth the extra $$.

I ended up paying $1.98 for a one gallon container of vinegar, which brought my cost down to $0.38 for 32 oz. of glass cleaner. Compare with $2-$3 for the national brands and you’re saving at least 81%! If you go through 12 bottles per year you’ll have saved at least $20. Now combine that with savings you’ve realized by making other cleaners and you can see how it will add up!

http://Www.crunchybetty.com has this recipe for windex…1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 tbs. cornstarch (yup!) and 2 cups water. You have to shake every time, but it cleans better than ANYTHING I have ever used (I’m a residential housekeeper) and smells mostly like rubbing alcohol. I think the cornstarch is the real star here. I also add one drop of dishsoap. Just one drop!

I read somewhere to put vinegar in a jar as well as some orange peels. I think it said five, but I would imagine less would do. Then, let it sit for three weeks. It is an all purpose cleaner. Since its sitting for a few weeks, it is infusing the vinegar and maybe it would cut the vinegar smell. Not sure though as I haven’t tried it, but I do have some oranges! So I will be trying it soon.

Oh, let us know if you do try it. I hope it works as good as this stuff but without the smell :)
