As couponers, we can occasionally fall into the habit of buying brand name items with a coupon, without taking the time to compare our final price against store brands. Here are some things to consider next time you shop:
- What’s my final price per ounce? Sometimes store brands will beat our best price, even with a coupon.
- What is the quality of your store’s generic items? Admittedly, this will vary quite a bit. But keep in mind that generic items ain’t what they use to be. Our local store (HEB) has very high standards for anything with their name on it. And since the prices are so low, I am very comfortable opting for store brands whenever they are less expensive.
- Try store brands for items that rarely have coupons. Examples are store brand butter, cheese, meat, convenience items and some canned foods.
