Momspiration Monday

March 18, 2013 · 0 comments

Around this time of year, I start to gather ideas and materials for the upcoming summer program I am planning for my kiddos – especially my youngest. If you are interested in creating a home summer program, here are a few resources I love. First up, Raising Lemons has a great Letter of the Week program, complete with activities and printables to get your creative juices flowing.

Somewhat Simple
has a free printable Summer Schedule for kiddos to give them a theme each day.

Review the list at House of Grace for 9 skills your child will need in kindergarten.

Practice numbers with the free printable from Modern Parents Messy Kids.

Go on a shape hunt around the house with ideas from Imprints from Tricia.

Find dozens of imaginative math activities at The Imagination Tree.

Identify animals at the zoo with the free printable Zoo Passport from We Wilsons.

Scroll through HERE (past this post) for more preschool activities.  Or have a look at my preschool program last year.

My Summer Preschool Program {Part 5}

May 20, 2011 · 4 comments

Read Part 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Getting Organized
Once I had my goals set, themes chosen and lesson plans in place it was time to gather the material and organize myself.  I started out with a plastic crate-style filing box, some file folders, a notebook and a few boxes for organizing toys and supplies.  As I am accumulating and storing items, I am also writing each of them into the lesson plans so I’m sure to use them!

Here’s an example.  A few days ago, I found a new Pond Life Preschool Pack that will go great with my Animal unit.  After printing them off, I added them to my file box, then I grabbed all of my planning sheets for this unit and wrote the Pond Life activities in for several different days.

My plan is to gather as many ideas and supplies as I can now, then fill in the blanks for any needed activities as we go along.  By reviewing my planning sheets about a week in advance throughout the summer, I can be aware of any learning goals that don’t yet have a planned activity and get to work on finding them.

For those of you who asked about my Circle Time Board (shown above), it’s nothing more than a large display board I found at Target with some visual representations of our learning goals.  Most of it was made using construction paper and dollar store finds.  My son is a very visual learner so in our case this was an important thing.  Lakeshore Learning has several of these,  some of which can be easily made at home!

I hope this series has given you a few ideas for summer preschool activities you can do at home.  Stay tuned, because next week I’ll be sharing more of what I’m doing with my older kiddos!

My Summer Preschool Program {Part 4}

May 19, 2011 · 0 comments

Read Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

For those of you considering a summer home preschool program, here are some resources we are using:

Alphabet Activities:

  • Get a free Print Dashed font download. With this you can type any word and print for your child to practice writing.
  • Confessions of a Homeschooler has free printables and tons of alphabet activity ideas.  Just click her ABC’s and 123′s button.
  • We are using ZooPhonics and loving it!  It uses movement to help small children learn letter sounds.
  • Alphabet Activities and printables from First School.

Shapes and Patterns:

  • We love the Power Magnets found on Amazon.  You can draw shapes on a white board with a dry erase marker and have the children copy with magnets.  You can also use them to make patterns, letters and group by color.
  • I have cut several shapes out of construction paper, laminated them and put them on a keyring.  We will use it to go on a shape hunt through the house, yard and on various outings (including grocery shopping).
  • More shape activities via Confessions of a Homeschooler.

Colors:

  • Another key ring, this time full of colors for a daily color hunt.
  • The pink flower shown above is actually part of a board book I purchased at the Dollar Tree and cut up to use as flash cards.  I couldn’t find any color flash cards that I liked, so I improvised!
  • Printable coloring pages.  You could also look for a color-themed coloring book at the local dollar store.
  • Paint Brush color matching, color words and color puzzle activities can be found on Confessions of a Homeschooler.

Numbers:

  • Our circle time number activity is the Number Hop.  We are progressively working our way to the number ten this summer, and our little dollar store frog (attached with velcro) is hopping from number to number as we go!  Once he lands on the number of the week, we leave him there and remove the number card.  It gets used for various counting activities throughout the rest of the class time.
  • Lots of number review activities from Confession of a Homeschooler.  I love that blog, in case you didn’t notice.
