It’s a phrase my pastor coined. And I’m afraid it’s a phrase I have perfected. You see, I’m a worrier by nature. As such, I spend way too much time focused on things that have no eternal significance. Things that I cannot control. Like the economy. The unemployment rate. The price of milk. Whether or not I made a good impression…
When I finally wear myself out in a frazzled heap, the Lord reminds me that even the air in my lungs has been ordained by Him. He is sovereign. He is crazy about me. And I have nothing to fear.
And so I breathe a sigh of relief and bask in the comfort of the one true Comforter. Time passes. And eventually I seem to find my way back to my familiar state of frazzlement. So what’s my deal? Why does worry have such a stronghold on my life?
Well after 36 years, I’ve finally recognized a pattern. Yeah, I’m a slow learner. I’ve noticed that during the times in my life when I am diligent about being thankful, the fear subsides. It’s kind of backwards from what you would expect. In my human-ness, I expect circumstances to be great and then thankfulness to follow. Instead, choosing to be thankful changes the landscape of my circumstances! As my heart opens up in praise, God shows me the beauty in my present situation. I see with new eyes!
Eureka!
Now you’d think knowing that would be enough, right? Not so! At least for me, it takes awhile for truth to permeate my behavior. I am, and will remain, a glass-half-empty kinda gal unless, by the grace of God, I decidedly work toward changing that. God gives me the tools, but I must pick them up and use them. So now, in order to be more consistent in my attitude of thankfulness, I’ve created this Praise Journal. On the cover are photos of everything that makes me happy: my kids making silly faces, my hubby, knitting, nursing. Inside I jot my thoughts of praise.
Worry has become a bad habit to me. So I am trying to establish a new habit! For this week’s edition of Works For Me Wednesday, we are doing it backwards. Instead of giving you a solution, I give you a problem and ask for a solution. So here’s my problem. Help me establish a new habit of thankfulness. Any ideas?
Ahhh…tax month. Doncha love it? For the first time in a long time, we’ll be getting a refund. I’d be a lot more excited except we have a rampant case of Murphy’s Law going on around here…hubbys truck broke down, the air conditioning in my minivan konked out (a necessity in Texas), and it looks like my 6 year old will need glasses. So I’m trying really hard to be thankful for the extra money to pay for this stuff rather than frustrated that none of it will go into savings. The good news is that we are right on track for our FREE Christmas goal! Here’s how it’s panning out:
AMAZON.COM MONEY I spent a little of my Amazon earnings this month, so I’m back down to $154. Got some great deals though. Hubby got 5 shirts, I got another subscription to ALL YOU magazine and I got several toys to put away for Christmas. My goal is to have $700 stashed away by Christmas.
If you’d like free Amazon money, your to-do list should include joining: ~SWAGBUCKS – I’m earning about $5 in Amazon gift cards per day, mostly from my referrals. ~IPSOS I-SAY will also get you free amazon gift cards, but I redeem these points for restaurant gift cards. ~If you have a blog, you can also earn by becoming an Amazon.com affiliate. Scroll down to the bottom of their homepage to find the PARTNERS link.
CASH SAVINGS I have created my own version of a Christmas club using survey income. You can read all about it HERE. Presently my balance is almost $270. My goal is $1000 in the bank by end of November. Here are a few to get you started. I am a member of all of these, so I can vouch for them being reputable companies: ~My Survey – top payer for March. When you get a survey invite, it usually says you’ll earn 10-40 points. But that’s just for trying to qualify. When you qualify to complete the survey, you’ll get 100-1000 additional points. 1000 points equals $10. ~HCD Surveys ~Mindfield ~Your2Cents
RESTAURANT GIFT CARDS Read about how I get free restaurant meals for my family at least 8 times per year HERE. Here’s how it went this month: ~Chilis – $10 gift card from Ipsos ISay and $10 from Lightspeed Panel (used it for takeout). ~Olive Garden – $10 from Daily Survey Panel.
